Mesothelioma Symptoms

When pleural mesothelioma spreads to the lungs, symptoms that are typically seen in lung cancer, such as hoarseness and coughing up of blood may be present. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma may include chest pain, chronic coughing, and shortness of breath, fatigue, wheezing, hoarseness, weight loss, or blood in the phlegm from the lungs when coughing. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma, but a range of drugs and treatments such as chemotherapy can help to delay the symptoms of the disease.

Symptoms: Mesothelioma usually occurs after 30 years of exposure to asbestos dust. The symptoms can occur from both to three months before Mesothelioma is discovered. The use of asbestos was as wide and common as late as thirty years ago, and those that have recently manifested their mesothelioma symptoms got exposed to asbestos from the 1950s to the 1970s. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea and vomiting, weight loss, fever, bowel obstruction, loss of appetite and general pain in the stomach area.

There are a number of symptoms associated with pericardial mesothelioma. Diagnosing mesothelioma is often complicated, because the symptoms are similar to those of several other conditions. In general mesothelioma symptoms are not very specific. Since early symptoms of mesothelioma are non-specific, many sufferers will not be diagnosed with the cancer until it is too late to treat it.

Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma also evident in other illnesses include: shortness of breath, persistence of cough, weight loss and chest pain. The most common symptoms of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma are difficulty in breathing, chest pain, or both. The symptoms are a consequence of pressure exerted by the growing mass.

Abdominal symptoms and the systemic effects of cancer can cause severe weight loss in people with peritoneal mesothelioma. These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions. Due to the fact that these symptoms are frequent for a number of more common diseases such as pneumonia, mesothelioma is very difficult to diagnose in its early stages.
